University Announces Faculty Rank and Tenure Promotions

The University of Scranton granted promotions or tenure to 26 faculty members effective at the start of the 2015-2016 academic year.

Six faculty members have been promoted to professor: Daniel Haggerty, Ph.D., philosophy; Tata Mbugua, Ph.D., education; James Roberts, Ph.D., sociology and criminal justice; Robert Smith, Ph.D., biology; Patrick Tully, Ph.D., philosophy; and Kevin Wilkerson, Ph.D., counseling and human services.

Eight faculty members have been named associate professor: Barbara Buxton, Ph.D., nursing; Patrick Clark, Ph.D., theology and religious studies; Paul Cutrufello, Ph.D., exercise science and sport; Andrew LaZella, Ph.D., philosophy; Michelle McHugh, library; Matthew Meyer, Ph.D., philosophy; Kimberly Subasic, Ph.D., nursing; and Ileana Szymanski, Ph.D., philosophy.

The following three faculty members have been granted tenure and named associate professor: Douglas Boyle, Ph.D., accounting; Yamile Silva, Ph.D., world languages and cultures; and Robert Willenbrink, Ph.D., English and theatre.

Tenure has been granted to the following nine faculty members: George Aulisio, library; Sean Brennan, Ph.D., history; Will Cohen, Ph.D., theology and religious studies; Howard Fisher, Ph.D., communication; Teresa Grettano, Ph.D., English and theatre; Christian Krokus, Ph.D., theology and religious studies; Barry Kuhle, Ph.D., psychology; Stacy Smulowitz, Ph.D., communication; and Donna Witek, library.

Dr. Haggerty received his bachelor’s from St. Joseph’s University and his doctorate from Syracuse University. He has worked for the University since 2005.

Dr. Mbugua, who joined the University faculty in 1998, earned her bachelor’s from Nairobi University and her master’s and doctorate from Ohio University.

Dr. Roberts, who joined the University faculty in 2005, received his bachelor’s from Richard Stockton College of New Jersey and his master’s and doctorate from Rutgers University School of Criminal Justice.

Dr. Smith earned his bachelor’s from Alma College, his master’s from Central Michigan University, and his doctorate from The University of Southern Mississippi. He has worked at the University since 2003.

Dr. Tully, the chair of the Department of Philosophy, has worked at the University since 2005. He received his bachelor’s from Fordham University, his master’s from the University of Toronto, and his doctorate from Marquette University.

Dr. Wilkerson earned his bachelor’s from Colgate University, his master’s from the University of Vermont, and his doctorate from Syracuse University. He joined the University faculty in 2004.

Dr. Buxton earned her bachelor’s from Albright College, her master’s from Wilkes University, and her doctorate from the University of Wisconsin. She has worked at the University since 2005.

Dr. Clark, who the University has employed since 2010, received his bachelor’s from Duke University, his master’s from Boston College, and his doctorate from the University of Notre Dame.

Dr. Cutrufello has worked at the University since 2008. He earned his bachelor’s from The Pennsylvania State University, his master’s from Bloomsburg University, and his doctorate from Marywood University.

Dr. LaZella received his bachelor’s from Hamline University and his master’s and doctorate from DePaul University. He has worked at the since 2010.

Professor McHugh earned her bachelor’s from The Pennsylvania State University and her master’s degree from Clarion University. She has worked at the University since 2010.

Dr. Meyer earned his bachelor’s from the University of St. Thomas, his master’s of theological studies from Harvard University, and his doctorate from Boston University. He joined the University faculty in 2010.

Dr. Subasic, a University faculty member since 2006, attained her bachelor’s from St. Francis University, her master’s from the University of Massachusetts, and her doctorate from Saint Louis University.

Dr. Szymanski, a University faculty member since 2008, received her bachelor’s from Universidad Panamericana and her master’s and doctorate from the University of Guelph.

Dr. Boyle received his bachelor’s from The University of Scranton, his master’s from Columbia University, and his doctorate of business administration from Kennesaw State University. He has worked at the University since 2009.

Dr. Silva obtained her bachelor’s from Los Andes University and her master’s and doctorate from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. The University has employed her since 2009.

Dr. Willenbrink, who joined the University faculty in 2009, attained his bachelor’s at The University of Tulsa and his master’s and doctorate at the University of California, Santa Barbara.

Professor Aulisio received his bachelor’s from Bloomsburg University, his master’s degrees from Drexel University and the University of Pennsylvania. He has worked at the University since 2009.

Dr. Brennan, a University faculty member since 2009, earned his bachelor’s from Rockhurst University, his master’s from Villanova University, and his doctorate from the University of Notre Dame.

Dr. Cohen achieved his bachelor’s at Brown University, his master’s of divinity from St. Vladmir’s Orthodox Theological Seminary, and his doctorate from The Catholic University of America. He joined the University faculty in 2009.

Dr. Fisher received his bachelor’s from Minnesota State University, his master’s from Texas Tech University, and his doctorate from Ohio State University. He has worked at The University of Scranton since 2009.

Dr. Grettano, who earned her bachelor’s and master’s from the University of South Alabama and her doctorate from Illinois State University, has worked at the University since 2009.

Dr. Krokus received his bachelor’s from Lafayette College and his master’s and doctorate from Boston College. The University has employed him since 2009.

Dr. Kuhle earned his bachelor’s at Binghamton University and his doctorate from The University of Texas at Austin. Since 2009, he has been a faculty member of the University.

Dr. Smulowitz, who has worked for the University since 2009, earned her bachelor’s at Wilkes University, her master’s at Ithaca College Park School of Communication, and her doctorate at Rutgers University School of Communication.

Professor Witek received her bachelor’s from Tisch School of the Arts and her master’s degree from Long Island University. She has worked at the University since 2008.
